OTAN to Present at the Upcoming EL Civics Conferences

Posted on 01/10/2019

OTAN is excited to present at the upcoming EL Civics Conferences that will take place across California in January, February, and March. The conferences are organized by CASAS and are scheduled as follows:

  • Friday, January 18 – Pasadena
  • Friday, February 1 – Sacramento
  • Friday, February 22 – Anaheim
  • Friday, March 8 – Fresno

For more information and to register for one of the conferences, visit this page on the CASAS website: https://www.casas.org/training-and-support/casas-peer-communities/california-adult-education-accountability-and-assessment/california-el-civics

OTAN will be at all four conferences and is planning to present on the following topics:

  • Using Technology for EL Civics Workforce Skills – Learn how to incorporate technology into real world workforce preparation and training with EL Civics 243 COAAPs. Receive resources you can use with your ESL learners at all levels. Hear about strategies used at other agencies.
  • OTAN EL Civics Resources on Moodle – OTAN has organized resources for a number of EL Civics units available through its Moodle adultedcourses.org website that can be used in the classroom or in an online or blended learning environment. Participants will learn about the EL Civics resources on OTAN’s Moodle site - for example, vocabulary practice, reading and writing activities, and quizzes - and how they can access these resources for use with students in and out of the classroom.
  • Digital Resources to Support IELCE and IET – To meet the goals of WIOA, it is strongly encouraged that agencies require learners to use computers and other digital devices in instruction. This workshop will show participants how to take a lesson plan and integrate a technology component into it based on lesson goals. EL Civics objectives will be used, and participants will walk out with a list of tools that can be used to integrate those tools into EL Civics lessons.
  • Citizenship Prep: EdTech and Other Resources for Adult Ed – US Citizenship Online: N-400 and more! Participants will identify many teacher-created online resources in the form of websites, blogs, podcasts, and more. Examples of activities and ideas will be presented on how to use the resources inside and outside of the classroom. The official USCIS Citizenship Resource Center will be explored as well as other related resources.

We also look forward to presenting with our partners in adult education, including CASAS, CALPRO, CDE (California Department of Ed), and AEP (the Adult Education Program). Please register for one of the upcoming EL Civics Conferences for valuable information and training for your program!
