Martinez Adult Education 100 Year Celebration postcard

As Adult Education Week comes to a close, we want to take a moment to congratulate adult education agencies across California that are celebrating significant anniversaries this school year.

Martinez Adult Education External link opens in new window or tab is celebrating its 100-year anniversary on Wednesday, April 17. MAE began in 1919 offering evening classes to employees of the local Shell Refinery. Employees advocated for more classes, and within a few years, course offerings expanded to include typing, auto mechanics, and citizenship. MAE moved to its current campus location in 1978. Over the years, MAE has educated thousands of students and enriched the Martinez community and surrounding areas. The open house celebration on the 17th will include displays, demonstration, live entertainment, and, of course, food and prizes! The school also plans to honor students who have recently received their US citizenship. We also want to congratulate two other adult education programs that are celebrating significant anniversaries this school year. Watsonville/Aptos/Santa Cruz Adult Education External link opens in new window or tab began in 1928 and celebrated its 90-year anniversary in December of last year. Like Martinez, the adult education program began by offering evening classes to local residents. It now offers classes at over 30 locations across Santa Cruz County, and has a renewed focus especially on teaching English as a Second Language to county residents who need to learn English for work and for their children and families.

Finally, Escondido Adult School External link opens in new window or tab celebrated its 50-year anniversary (in 2018) last fall, and the school looks forward to the next 50 years!

As we conclude Adult Education Week today, we want to remind you that nominations for the Adult Education Students Succeed program are due on Monday, April 15.
