Adult Education Week Begins!

Posted on 04/08/2019

Row of books with Never Stop Learning across the spines

This week is Adult Education Week. This is a time to highlight the vital work being done across California to help adults in a number of realms: teaching English to second language learners and preparing them to obtain citizenship, helping an adult student obtain a high school equivalency certificate or complete their high school diploma program, training students in short-term certificate programs such as medical or dental assistant, transitioning adults to post-secondary and employment opportunities, and so much more.

A number of adult education programs will be honored this week for the work they do and the contributions they make to their local communities. This is a direct result of the advocacy work being done to showcase adult education and express the importance of adult education in the lives of local citizens. Our OTAN news item External link opens in new window or tab from a few weeks back discussed how adult education agencies can get the word out during Adult Education Week (ideas courtesy of CCAE) and why promoting adult education should happen year-round. This is also a good time to remind the field about COABE’s Educate and Elevate campaign External link opens in new window or tab , which is a way for adult educators across the nation to advocate for adult education as an investment in America’s future. You can learn how to get involved and more on the Educate and Elevate website.

Adult education programs this week are being honored for the role they play in building and strengthening communities across California. This vital work will continue in 2019 and for years to come.
