2012 CATESOL Awards Announcement

Each year, CATESOL recognizes outstanding teachers and students with its annual recognition awards, student essay contest and professional development scholarship award. Please take the time to nominate a colleague and encourage a student to apply. This year's awards include:

  • The CATESOL Gail E. Weinstein Teacher Recognition Award honors an "outstanding adult ESL practitioner who has demonstrated leadership, creativity, and dedication to learner-centered instruction." The $300 award is given in memory of Gail E. Weinstein, creator of the pedagogical framework Learner's Lives as Curriculum. The deadline for submission is February 1, 2012.   • The CATESOL Norma Shapiro Award, is given to "a CATESOL member and Adult Level ESL teacher who has demonstrated exceptional skill in at least two of the following three areas: classroom teaching, teacher-training/professional development, materials writing, or curriculum development." The award includes a library of ESL professional books. The deadline for submission is January 13, 2012. Go to Norma B. Shapiro Award [www] for eligibility requirements and application directions.
  • The CATESOL Adult Level Professional Development Scholarship encourages CATESOL members to nominate a colleague who is not yet a CATESOL member to participate in the CATESOL State Conference. Both the winning nominee and the nominator receive a Super Saver registration discount and a 12-month membership to CATESOL.   • The CATESOL 2012 Adult Level Essay Contest, awarded to an outstanding adult education/non-credit ESL student with the winning essay. This year's theme is "Deeply Rooted, Always Growing ,with the writing prompt of: "Roots and Branches: How do the connections to your first language and culture give you the strength to grow and learn in this new culture and language?" The submission deadline is February 1, 2012. The winner receives $100 worth of educational texts. Please go to Adult Level Student Essay [PDF] for application directions.
