Fairfield-Suisun Adult School—Jonah Detzel

Jonah Detzel - Fairfield-Suisun Adult School
Jonah Detzel

I am currently a student at the Fairfield Suisun Adult School. I am attending this school in order to receive my high school diploma. My reasons for getting my diploma now rather than when I was still in high school are simple. I was too many credits behind and did not fell like it was possible for me to make them up in time without becoming a "super senior." So I chose to drop out and just get my GED so I could finish my enlistment papers for the Army and move on with my life. However, things did not go as planned. I learned that our military only keeps a periodic "window" open to recruits with GEDs and I didn't study or test in the right amount of time in order for me to receive my GED and enlist. So I realized that in order for me to enlist in the military, like I have dreamt of doing since I was seven years old, I'd have to go back to school and get my diploma.

If I didn't have the adult school as an option to get my diploma I would most likely be sitting around without a job and without a positive future. Coming from parent that were addicts, I was at a risk of becoming an addict myself and that isn't an option for me. My parents worked too hard to clean themselves up for me to go down that road. I wanted to clean my act up and get my life together to make my parents proud. So I moved out of beautiful Roseville, California, back to my previous home of Fairfield to further my education and pursue my dream of enlisting in the military.

My plans for the future are to graduate on November 5th and then working at the local Buffalo Wild Wings until I finish my enlistment papers and receive a ship date. While working at Buffalo Wild Wings, I also plan on hopefully attaining a second job and working hard until I leave. Thank you for taking your time to read our letters, Mr. Editor. I hope reading this letter, although short in length, has opened your eyes to the importance of this school and the necessity for young adults like myself to have the option for a better future. Again myself, and my peers thank you for your time.

Fairfield Suisun Adult School—Loreto Garcia

Loreto Garcia - Fairfield-Suisun Adult School
Loreto Garcia

My name is Loreto Garcia, I was born in Durango, Mexico and came from a family of twelve: seven brothers and five sisters. My first language is Spanish, and I learned English as a second language at age seventeen, when I came to the United States.

The first couple of years living in the US I worked in Southern CA. During the day I worked at a window factory and to ESL classes at night. I traveled through most of the Northern States where I performed different jobs. I worked in the fields, in machine shop, etc. I also experienced extreme weather changes from summer to winter. It was hard for me to get used to, thus my decision to return to California's great weather.

Towards the end of 1978, upon returning from Indiana to Southern CA, I was told by a relative of a fast growing company in Napa, CA. Stucco Stone, a family owned business, was hiring for different job positions. I moved to Northern CA, got hired at Stucco Stone, and worked for the company the last thirty five years.

I lost my job recently, which motivated me to return to school and get my GED diploma. Now a days, not having a high school or GED diploma limits your job search, job interviews or getting a job. Therefore, getting the GED diploma is my number one goal.

Fortunately the adult school still provides a variety of classes that meet most of its communities' educational needs. Some of the classes offered are;

  • GED Classes
  • High School Diploma Classes
  • Career Education Classes
  • Positive Parenting Classes, etc.

I feel very confident that putting my best effort forward, and with the help of experienced teachers, I will achieve my first goal (getting my GED diploma). My second goal is to get a job and work until retirement age. I feel I have achieved the American dream. I am grateful for all the opportunities I've had in this great country. The never ending opportunities of self improvement, living a better life and being a productive citizen have changed my life.

I hope everyone wanting to enhance their career, education or just for self improvement will take advantage of the classes offered by the adult school.

Fairfield Suisun Adult School—Vegas Glover

Vegas Glover, Fairfield-Suisun Adult School
Vegas Glover

My name is Vegas Glover and I go to the Fairfield-Suisun Adult School. I like the Fairfield-Suisun Adult School because of all the things that the school has done for me. The Fairfield-Suisun Adult School has given me back my faith, which has enabled me to believe in myself. The Fairfield-Suisun Adult School has given me confidence, which has made me believe I can get my high school diploma if I work hard.

If I wasn't regularly attending the Fairfield-Suisun Adult School, there are many possible things I could be doing. However, most of the things that I would be doing would not be the best for my future. Some of the things I would be doing if I wasn't at school are: looking at music videos, playing video games, or watching television. Some of the actions I could be participating in instead could land me in jail or even dead.

I would like to say thank you to the Fairfield-Suisun Adult School for the person I have become. This school made me want more in my life for myself and also for my future. Thank you Fairfield-Suisun Adult School for having so much consideration in your students. We appreciate you so much and thank you for reading the letter.
