ACSA Adult Ed Conference

The theme of the ACSA conference is Adult Education: NOT Business as Usual. The conference will be held in San Diego on Sept. 23-25.

Vicki Good Named Administrator of the Year

ACSA has chosen Vicki Good, Principal of Fairfield-Suisun Adult School, Administrator of the year. She has been with her district since 1984, and has been a staunch advocate for adult education.

Adult School Impact 2007-08 Report

New Government and History for Citizenship Tests

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has created a more meaningful naturalization test. To address the new USCIS content and standardized approach to test administration, CASAS has revised its Government and History for Citizenship test. No training is necessary for agencies to order and use the CASAS Government and History for Citizenship test. New CASAS test forms (numbers 965 and 966) will be available September 15, 2009. New CASAS Reading Test Now Available

Form 84X, a new reading test that bridges between Levels B and C of the Life and Work Reading series is now available. To order, print and fax the WIA Title II Ordering Guide (login required). For information about the test, contact CASAS.


Dept. of Ed. to Accelerate $11.37 Billion in Stimulus Funds

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, last month, announced that the Department of Education will accelerate stimulus spending by making $11.37 billion in Title I, IDEA, and Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) funding, as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), available to states one month early to help save jobs and drive reform. Online Administrators' Forum

The very successful series of webinars produced last spring by the leadership projects is back this fall with a new line-up of online workshops. The first session is on The Adult School Administrator as Business Manager.  Read session descriptions and register.

CA College Transition Institute and Summit

The California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project (CALPRO) will host the California College Transition Institute and Summit Meeting. At this professional development event California adult education administrators and policy leaders will learn about models and methods for developing college pathway programs and forming partnerships to enhance transitions for California’s adult students from basic education to college. The event will take place in Sacramento on Oct 28-30.  The registration deadline is Sept. 28. For more information visit the News and Events page of CALPRO’s Web site.

CASAS Fall 2009 Regional and Online Trainings

CASAS announces Fall 2009 Statewide Regional and Web-based Trainings available for all WIA Title II 225/231 and EL Civics funded agencies. CDE policy requires at least one representative (minimum) from each funded agency to attend at least one CASAS Implementation training and one California Accountability session each program year. Agencies are encouraged to have a staff team participate in the training sessions. Attend in person at a regional training or join an online Web session.

Distance Learning Forum

Heidi Silver-Pacuilla, whose study on the skills adult learners need to study online was recently published by NIFL, will be presenting her findings in an online forum on Oct. 9. A second session on Oct. 23 will include other presenters and focus on how we can help our students develop the skills they need to be successful independent online learners. Register for Fall Online PD Courses

This fall the California Adult Literacy Professional Development Project (CALPRO) will offer four professional development courses online.  Adult educators may now register for these courses, in which a subject-area expert facilitates a group of colleagues. Each course explores a different topic: teaching students with learning disabilities, multilevel ESL instruction, lesson planning, and adult learning. 

Discussion on Advising ABE / ASE Students

Join your colleagues across the state and nation by participating in the National Institute for Literacy’s electronic discussion on The  Role of Counseling and Advising in Adult Basic and Secondary Education.  The online discussion, which will run Sept. 14-18, features the following guest panelists: Judith A. Alamprese, Cathryn Ganno, Sandy Goodman, Margaret Van Duyne, and Anita H. Webb.
