Activity Description
This glossary list is part of Algebra Lab, which is an online learning environment that focuses on the high school math topics and math skills called upon in introductory physics and chemistry courses. There is some audio support.
Preparation
- Familiarize yourself with the Web site.
- Print Example Document = for each student.
How-To
- Use as a resource in math discussions.
- Assign students a vocabulary activity to introduce this resource site to them. The Example Document has students look up words, write the definitions, and add sentences. They are include spaces for more words they would like to learn, look up, and write sentences for.
- A good follow up activity is for students then to share their words with the class.
Teacher Tips
- Post the Web address for students to access as needed, using a Word document with links, a class Web site, or a bookmark on lab computers.

- This site is designed to help with Algebra (and science vocabulary)and instruction. It can be used in conjunction with the lessons in Algebra Lab, or as a stand-alone support tool.

Lesson Plan
Brainstorm math terminology. As partners try to define some of the terms the students brainstormed. Gather as a class.
Many times when we study math we struggle with the vocabulary. At AlgebraLab they have a glossary we can use to look up words. As pairs students go to the link for AlgebraLab
You can handout the worksheet or send it to students to work on digitally using Google Docs or Microsoft Word.
The beginning six words are there to practice looking up, discussing the definition and then writing a sentence. Do this with words 1. absolute value and 2. coefficient as a group.
For words 3 - 6 student pairs look them us using the glossary, discuss the definition and write sentences together.
Gather the class to go over the definitions and sentences together.
On the worksheet there are places to type four student selected words. As pairs, students find four new math words they want to investigate. After filling out the worksheet, students share their new words with the class. Discuss the new words and sentences created by the students.
Because this is a tool to use whenever new words are used in a math lesson, students can use the AlgebraLab glossary to help define those words and explain the words to the class.
