Posted on 06/26/2012

ELL-U, (www) a free professional development network for teachers working with adult English Language Learners (ELLs), will host several free, online professional development opportunities this summer. Participants receive a certificate of completion for all ELL-U learning activities that can be submitted to your state or program in accordance with their requirements.
An online, interactive study circle, Teaching Adult ELL Emergent Readers: Next Steps in Linking Research and Practice (SC18), will be conducted in three online sessions on July 13, July 27, and August 10, 2012 from 2:00 – 3:30 PM EST. Facilitated by ELL-U faculty member Patsy Vinogradov, participants will focus on the creation of a personalized action plan that applies research to classroom practice.
Second Language Acquisition: Myths, Beliefs, and What the Research Shows (OC01) is a free online course that offers participants a self-paced, online research-based introduction to second language acquisition by exploring common myths and beliefs about how languages are taught and learned. This course will counter or clarify popular views about second language acquisition and help course participants examine, develop, challenge, and support their knowledge and beliefs about how adults learn a new language.
Teaching Adult ELLs Who Are Emergent Readers (OC02) is a free online course that offers participants self-paced, online research-based information about teaching adult ELLs who are just beginning to acquire print literacy largely due to lack of access to formal schooling. This course will clarify how and why this particular ELL population is unique, offer processes for identifying emergent readers, and explore a range of teaching/assessment strategies that build initial literacy in adult ELLs. Finally, course participants will have the opportunity to consider how the information presented in the course applies to classroom language learning practices in a range of settings.
