Posted on 03/13/2014

TDLS 2014

March 8, 2014 was the culmination of another successful OTAN Technology and Distance Learning Symposium (TDLS). The event was held on the beautiful campus of Baldwin Park Adult School. Many thanks to the administrators and staff who were instrumental in hosting the Symposium as well as for their gracious hospitality. We would especially like to acknowledge Baldwin Park Adult School administrators Frolian Mendoza, Associate Superintendent, and Dr. John Kerr, Senior Director, for their support.

Participants from Sacramento to San Bernardino were able to select from over 30 Symposium workshops, covering a variety of technology topics related to online, distance and blended learning, social media, and educational resources on the Web. In addition to workshops, Symposium participants networked with peers and added to technology conversations with support from facilitated lunch-time discussions.

TDLS14 received many compliments:

"Thank you for the conference. It was wonderful! People were so excited to go back and use what they had learned."

"Can't wait to start using the resources I learned about."

"This is my favorite technology conference!"

And at least one complaint:

"There's too many great workshop sessions offered at the same time -  I want to go to all of them!"

Keynote speaker, David Rosen, presented "Using Free Online Video Instruction for Adult Learners" to an engaged audience who enjoyed the video clips he shared. Some of the video clips that generated the most response from audience members were Will We Wear Computers in the Future? (computerized contact lenses!) and the Pomegranate (the world's smartest Smartphone!). Dr. Rosen also shared many strategies for teachers to help their low-income adult learners get and keep affordable broadband Internet at home. His presentation, along with handouts and presentations from other workshop presenters, is available on the TDLS Web site (www.otan.us/tdlsymposium) at OTAN.
