English Language Learner University (ELL-U) Activities for the Beginning of 2013

ELL-U has several activities coming up, so save the date to participate!

  • The Working with Emergent Readers Club will be launching in early January! Stay tuned for more details about the club's activities, including book groups, field trips, a learning plan, and a shared teaching idea bank!
  • Dr. Kimberly Johnson will be facilitating an upcoming online study circle, Learner-Centered Practice in Adult ESL (SC21). Registration will be opening shortly for the study circle, which will include three connected sessions on January 25, February 8, and February 22, 2013, all from 1:00 - 2:30 PM EST.
  • Mark your calendars for the Formative Assessment in Adult ESL: Focus on Student Learning (SC23) study circle. This study circle is a deeper dive into the ideas and concepts presented in the Formative Assessment to Inform Quality Adult ESL Instruction (OC03) online course. The study circle will be held in three connected sessions on February 21, March 7, and March 21, 2013 from 3:00 - 4:30 PM EST.

Activities for You to Join

A new, free online course (www) is available to registered ELL-U users! ELL-U continues to offer additional resources and learning activities as part of the Assessment in Adult ELL Programs learning priority. The latest online course, Formative Assessment to Inform Quality Adult ESL Instruction (OC03), is designed to help users understand the basics of formative assessment and how the results of formative assessment can be used to guide instructional decisions.

Upon completing this online course, participants will be able to:

  • Define formative assessment and explain its integral role in systematically planning and delivering adult ESL instruction;
  • Select and design a variety of formative assessment activities that engage learners in setting their own goals and monitoring their own progress in English language development; and
  • Use appropriate oral and written feedback techniques that inform learners of their progress toward meeting their goals in meaningful and comprehensible ways.
