As the new school year begins, there are many staff changes across the state, including some at CALPRO. Mariann Fedele, Director of CALPRO, has accepted a position at the American Institutes of Research heading up a new project that AIR will be running for the Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE). The project is called Promoting Teacher Effectiveness in Adult Education, and will establish adult education teacher competencies and an induction model to support adult educators in meeting those competencies. Mariann’s three-year tenure at CALPRO has been marked by many accomplishments. The Communities of Practice initiative has taken off; many schools have worked on creating professional learning communities; the Leadership Institute has continued despite the current economic climate; and regional and online workshops have continued to grow, with many teachers and administrators taking advantage of them. Mariann has been an effective and innovative leader for professional development in California, and although her departure date for the east coast is set for September 30, she will continue at AIR as a Senior Advisor to the CALPRO project.

Jacques LaCour, formerly Deputy Director of CALPRO, has been promoted to the position of Director. Jacques has a long history of leadership in adult education, especially in the area of professional development. He came to CALPRO from Oakland Adult and Career Education, where he led professional development among other responsibilities, and prior to that he was an administrator at Mt. Diablo Adult Education, and was also part of the Staff Development Institute, the precursor to CALPRO. Jacques has been instrumental at CALPRO in developing the Communities of Practice Initiative, as well as the Professional Learning Communities project.

Another stellar addition to the CALPRO staff is Dr. Cherise Moore, who until recently was the Director of Adult Education of Burbank Adult School and then the Director of Educational Support Services for Burbank Unified School District. Cherise has joined the CALPRO staff as a Senior Research Analyst as of August 22, and has already been active with CALPRO for several years as a member of the Professional Advisory Board and a facilitator of many professional development events.
