Online Professional Development Opportunities for Adult Educators

There are several upcoming online professional development opportunities of interest to adult educators. The courses listed below are instructor-led and charge a fee. You can find other online professional development opportunities, many of which are self-paced and free, at Professional Studies AE.

  • The National Association for Adults with Special Learning Needs (NAASLN) will offer a webinar series presented by Dr. Richard Cooper, "Teaching Math to Adults Who Have Learning Differences," beginning December 2, 2009. Topics will include background on learning differences and difficulties for adult learners as well as practical measures for teaching numeracy. You can register for one or more of these webinars, with a fee of $20 per webinar for NAASLN members and $40 for non-members. Please see NAASLN for a full description of each session and instructions on how to register.
  •  Research-based Strategies and Models for Adult Transitions to Postsecondary Education will be offered by World Education from January 14 to March 10, 2010. This course will examine the reasons why adult learners need to go beyond the GED and English language study to advance their earning potential, will address the challenges facing adult students in postsecondary education and investigate strategies and program models that support adult transitions to postsecondary education. The fee for this course is $249. 
  • Foundations of Teaching Adult Numeracy will be offered from January 18-February 26, 2010, also by World Education. This foundational course will explore the components of numeracy, reasons for student’s learning gaps and offer ways to address these issues in the classroom. The cost of this course is $179.00.
