Legislature Passes State Budget

Posted on 08/22/2007

After a 52 day delay, the Senate finally passed the budget bill (SB 77) and several key trailer bills and sent them to the Governor for final action. The final vote in the Senate received the bare minimum required to meet the 2/3 requirement. The two Republican votes in the Senate were from Senators Maldonado (who had voted for the budget more than two weeks ago) and Ackerman.

The budget now goes to the governor for signature. The governor has said that he supports the bill, and is expected to sign the bill by the end of the week, but he has also said that he will veto approximately $700 million in spending.

Of key interest to adult education, the COLA will be 4.53 percent, and CBET will be fully funded at $50 million. CBET authorizing legislation has sunset, and as a result CBET will now be funded on a year by year basis.
